This class is designed for students with no prior knowledge of Spanish. Emphasis is placed on reading and listening comprehension to support the development of grammar and speaking skills. Participants will engage with a variety of comprehensible materials, including videos, songs, books, short stories, and other reading passages, all while receiving grammar instruction in context.

Note: There will be no class sessions from March 3 through March 17. Classes will resume on Tuesday, March 24.

This is not a structured language class but an opportunity to practice and enjoy casual discussions entirely in French. Conversations will be guided by group interests, with occasional new vocabulary introduced. Come connect, share, and immerse yourself in lively discussions en français!

Learn how to explore your inner artist through creation of your own heartfelt greeting cards for a special person or occasion. No previous experience needed. Attendees will receive 3 card kits to complete at each session. Each kit will include pre-cut and scored card stock pieces; sentiment labels; plus ribbon or bling to finish the card as needed. Sample cards and detailed instructions will be available, plus stamps and ink pads for use. Participants will need to bring their own scissors and glue (liquid and craft glue).

Intermediate level students with some prior knowledge of Spanish will engage in interactive practice in speaking, listening, and writing with limited translation. Students will practice verb tenses, grammatical structures, and vocabulary while learning about travel, food, shopping, and holidays such as the Day of the Dead, current events, well known persons, art, folk art, and points of interest in the Spanish-speaking world.

Learn Spanish with Destinos, Part 2. A continuation of the 4 part course using the acclaimed PBS video series in the form of a telenovela with 52 episodes. Students learn Spanish while following a compelling story that’s especially suited for developing listening comprehension skills. Instructor provides grammar lessons, speaking opportunities and abundant reading materials. Parts 3 and 4 will be offered in future terms. New students should have completed one semester of Spanish or equivalent.

This class follows the T’ai Chi for Health Institute (TCHI) program developed by Dr. Paul Lam—an evidence-based approach supported by more than 30 medical studies for its safety and effectiveness. Participants begin with Chair T’ai Chi and gradually build from there, focusing on improved balance, coordination, and joint health. Rooted in Sun Style T’ai Chi, this practice is easy to follow, adaptable for all fitness levels, and ideal for continuing at home. Whether you're new to T’ai Chi or looking to deepen your practice, this class offers a welcoming and supportive path to wellness at your own pace.

Hula is a joyful way to stay active, improve coordination, and connect through music and movement. In this beginner-level program, students will learn basic hula steps and two to three simple mele (songs). As we build skills and confidence together, the class will work toward learning complete, easy-to-follow routines with the shared goal of performing as a group at OLLI’s Camp Out in June. All experience levels are welcome. Attire: Please wear comfortable pants and a top that allow you to move freely. Socks, light flat shoes, or older ballet shoes are recommended.

Please note: No class will be held on Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day. The class has been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 26, at 10:00 a.m.

Along the way, we’ll discuss what to expect, how to prepare, and practical insights, with Spanish language woven throughout. This course is best suited for participants with intermediate-to-advanced Spanish (or strong conversational ability), as sessions will emphasize understanding and practicing the language.

Build confidence in speaking Italian in this conversation-focused course designed for high beginners and low intermediate learners. Combining elements of Italian 1 and 2, students will practice real-life communication while strengthening listening skills, expanding vocabulary, and reinforcing essential grammar through guided dialogues and interactive activities. Cultural elements will be included to enhance the learning experience. Students are responsible for bringing any materials they used in Italian 1 and/or Italian 2 to support class discussions and activities. Additional handouts will be provided by the instructor.

This special early session is for current Ukulele 2 members to reconnect, dust off their instruments, refresh their skills, and begin preparing music for the fall semester and future community performances.

Continue the 4-part course using the acclaimed PBS telenovela series Destinos (52 episodes). Workbook/study guides and an audio program are included (provided by the instructor). Students should have prior intermediate grammar experience, including the preterit and imperfect past tenses.This semester’s grammar will include forms and uses of the subjunctive mood.

Lifescapes classes focus on evoking memories and facilitating writing about one’s life experiences. Prior to each session, a piece of literature is provided by email for the class participant to read. Questions are provided as a springboard for writing. Students then write short pieces to share during class sessions. All class members are encouraged to contribute one story to a themed anthology that is published at the end of the year. Each class member who submits a story will receive a free copy of the anthology book. Seats are available for interested members. This is a structured class designed for those with limited knowledge of the French language. Vocabulary and grammar concepts are sequentially presented to help students build a solid foundation in a supportive environment. Some students will have take the course in previous semesters, but all learners are welcome! We are working on regular verbs in the present tense so new participants will not be far behind. The instructor provides all handouts and worksheets. Short stories, conversations, songs, videos, and games will have you speaking French in no time!

Designed as a relaxed, low-pressure experience, the class encourages friendly interaction and helps strengthen confidence in using German in real-life situations. Join others who are continuing their journey to improve their German speaking skills—mit Spaß (with fun).

Ever wanted to play the ukulele? In the first two weeks you will learn to play three chords for playing multiple songs. The class will sing and play over 100 songs during the semester with an emphasis on having fun and helping each other. We welcome both singers and players. Bring your own instrument or 10 ukes will be available during lessons for those who wish to try one. Call William Papa at (775) 240-4930 to reserve a uke. Italian 3 builds upon the skills acquired in Italian 2, with a strong focus on enhancing oral fluency and listening comprehension. Students will gain confidence using past and future tenses while expanding their vocabulary. Through authentic materials—including music, short readings, and videos—learners will continue to improve their language skills and explore the nuances of Italian culture. Comprehensive grammar notes and worksheets are provided.

Have you ever wanted to play the guitar – either electric or acoustic? Learn common chords and chord progressions to play many popular/classic songs in many genres, plus strumming patterns, how to read guitar tablature and chord diagrams, basic guitar maintenance, changing strings, and much more! Besides group practice you’ll use online YouTube “play-alongs” on various songs both in class and as homework. You’ll also learn proper posture, how to warm-up your hands and fingers, and basic dexterity exercises. We use a tried and true method to learn the guitar, and will get you playing your first song on day one! You must bring your own acoustic or electric guitar, guitar tuner, picks, a music stand, a foot rest, and a guitar stand. For electric guitars, bring a small amplifier (a Spark Go or Spark Mini amplifier is great for class and for learning songs). A course book will be provided. Are you a solid beginning guitar player ready to take your skills to the next level? If so, have a look at this curriculum to get you there…all in 10 weeks!  Here’s what’s included:

Learn Songs by Chord Progressions

• Learn how to play popular songs in commonly used chord progressions
• Play along together with your classmates
• Use online YouTube “play-alongs” in class and at home for practice

Practical Theory

• Some simple approaches to learn how to find notes on the guitar
• Learn how the Major Scale formula is the musical foundation to EVERYTHING
• Chord construction, chord progressions, the Circle of Fifths, and much more!
• This is the secret to unlock how music works on any instrument…including the guitar

Intermediate Skills

• Barre chords, plus alternate ways to play difficult chords like B and F (major and minor)
• Learn more complex strumming patterns
• Add expression to your playing with bends, slides and vibrato

You must bring your own acoustic or electric guitar, guitar tuner, picks, a music stand, a foot rest, and a guitar stand. For electric guitars, bring a small amplifier (a Spark Go or Spark Mini amplifier is great for class and for learning songs). A course book will be provided.

Pre-requisites:

• Able to tune your guitar to standard tuning (EADGBe)
• Familiarity with most open chords 
• Already able to play and strum through a few basic songs in common chord progressions like A, D, E or G, C, D 
• Able to find most notes and the low E and A strings
