Outdoor Activities   

All activities require participants to be a current OLLI member and to register in advance for each outdoor activity. No proof of vaccination is required for Outdoor Activities. We welcome all first timers but please ensure that you sign up for activities that are within your current level of fitness.

  • Snowshoeing

    Snowshoers will explore the trails and fire roads of the Greater Tahoe and Galena area. Snowshoe hikes will be from 3 to 10 miles long, and generally will occur on Mondays or Tuesdays, or occasional other days if the snow conditions warrant. Meeting times and places will vary according to the quality of the snow and weather conditions. Because of the changeable weather, we will post events as soon as reasonably feasible, but at least a couple days beforehand.

    Explore the Reno, Sparks, Lake Tahoe, and Sierra area by trails, paths, and roads. Most hikes are 6-12 miles in total length and moderately difficult with elevation changes. Hikes will take 4-7 hours, depending on distance and difficulty. For more details, visit ollireno.com/outdoor/.

    Explore trails and paths in the Truckee Meadows and surrounding areas. Light Hikes are usually 3 to 5 miles in total length with some elevation change.   • Friday Casual Walkers

    OLLI Casual Walkers will stroll on flat easy paved paths in Reno and Sparks parks and along Truckee River trails. The pace will be slow and there will be frequent stops to relax and socialize. Distance will be 1 - 2 miles, closer to 1, with shorter options. Will try to have pertinent short talks/lectures mid walk. Participants with mobility issues, including those requiring mobility devices such as canes or “walkers” will be accommodated and welcome, but all Casual Walkers must be in otherwise good health and have good balance. For more details, visit ollireno.com/outdoor/.

    Hike 5-8 miles on dirt and paved trails with moderate elevation gains in the Reno, Sparks, Carson, and Lake Tahoe areas. Hikes will take 3-5 hours in length. Elevation gains on the longer distances will approach but not generally exceed 1,500 feet. Driving distances will vary, with ridesharing when appropriate. Hikers should be in good physical condition with previous hiking experience, and have the ability to hike 2 mph uphill and 2.5 mph on flat trails. For more details, visit ollireno.com/outdoor/.

    Do you seek out the trail less traveled? Is spending the day in the mountains and foothills your idea of having a good time? If so, join a Long-Distance Hikers outing. Hikes are typically 8–15 miles in distance with 1,500 to 3,000 feet of gain, and last between 5-8 hours. You will feel a tangible sense of accomplishment!     Kayakers will head for flat water: Sparks Marina, Donner Lake, various Lake Tahoe areas and other nearby lakes and reservoirs, depending on water availability. Canoes are welcome. Kayakers will spend 2-4 hours on the water. Participants must provide their own kayak or canoe, paddles, Personal Flotation devices, and other safety equipment. For more details, visit ollireno.com/outdoor/.

    For bike riders who are interested in longer, more challenging distances and rides around the Truckee Meadows, Carson Valley, Genoa and the Lake Tahoe areas. Rides will be about 18 - 25 miles, on paved roads or bike paths.     Enjoy riding along established bike paths in the early morning hours when the temperature in Reno is still cool. Rides may be in Reno, Sparks, Washoe Valley, or the Lake Tahoe Basin. Minimal street riding. Rides are usually 10-18 miles in length and typically take 2-3 hours.
