Outdoor Activities   

All activities require participants to be a current OLLI member and to register in advance for each outdoor activity. No proof of vaccination is required for Outdoor Activities. We welcome all first timers but please ensure that you sign up for activities that are within your current level of fitness.

  • Thursday Hikers

    Explore the Reno, Sparks, Lake Tahoe, and Sierra area by trails, paths, and roads. Most hikes are 6-12 miles in total length and moderately difficult with elevation changes. Hikes will take 4-7 hours, depending on distance and difficulty. For more details, visit ollireno.com/outdoor.

    Light Hikers will explore trails and paths in the Truckee Meadows and surrounding areas. Light Hikes are usually 3 to 5 miles in total length with some elevation change. Events will take from 2 to 3 hours to complete. For more details, visit ollireno.com/outdoor.

  • Wednesday Walkers

    Traverse paved paths and groomed natural surface trails in Reno, Sparks, and surrounding areas on Wednesday mornings. Walks are approximately 2-3 miles in length, with some small elevation changes, and usually take less than 2 hours to complete with the pace accommodating slower walkers. For more details, visit ollireno.com/outdoor.

  • Moderate Hikers

    Hike 5-8 miles on dirt and paved trails with moderate elevation gains in the Reno, Sparks, Carson, and Lake Tahoe areas. Hikes will take 3-5 hours in length. Elevation gains on the longer distances will approach but not generally exceed 1,500 feet. Driving distances will vary, with ridesharing when appropriate. Hikers should be in good physical condition with previous hiking experience, and have the ability to hike 2 mph uphill and 2.5 mph on flat trails. For more details, visit ollireno.com/outdoor.

    We will venture out to various kayaking locations that are a little further away than the Tuesday Kayakers. Some events may include an opportunity for a 2-day (Wednesday-Thursday) kayak. The event dates will be scheduled at least two weeks prior to the event, so watch the OLLI Reno Outdoors Event Calendar for event posting. Participants must provide their own kayak or canoe, paddles, Personal Flotation Devices, and other safety equipment. For more details, visit ollireno.com/outdoor

  • Friday Casual Walkers

    OLLI Casual Walkers will stroll on flat easy paved paths in Reno and Sparks parks and along Truckee River trails. The pace will be slow and there will be frequent stops to relax and socialize. Distance will be less than 2 miles, usually closer to 1 mile, with shorter options. Will try to have pertinent short talks/lectures mid walk. Participants with mobility issues, including those requiring mobility devices such as canes or “walkers” will be accommodated and welcome, but all Casual Walkers must be in otherwise good health and have good balance. For more details, visit ollireno.com/outdoor.

  • Long Distance Hikers

    Most hikes will take from 5-8 hours and the trailheads may be a significant distance from Reno. Some hikes will have difficult and strenuous sections with significant elevation changes. Occasional scrambling to the peaks may be needed, but nothing requiring ropes or helmets. The pace will be consistent but not punishing. For more details, visit ollireno.com/outdoor.

    Enjoy riding along established bike paths in the early morning hours when the temperature in Reno is still cool. Rides may be in Reno, Sparks, Washoe Valley, or the Lake Tahoe Basin. Minimal street riding. Rides are usually 10-18 miles in length and typically take 2-3 hours. At a minimum you are required to wear a helmet, and will not be allowed to participate without one. For more details, visit ollireno.com/outdoor.

    For bike riders who are interested in longer, more challenging distances and rides around the Truckee Meadows, Carson Valley, Genoa and the Lake Tahoe areas. Rides will be about 18 - 25 miles, on paved roads or bike paths.     Kayakers will head for flat water: Sparks Marina, Donner Lake, various Lake Tahoe areas and other nearby lakes and reservoirs, depending on water availability. Canoes are welcome. Kayakers will spend 2-4 hours on the water.
