Communicating: both personal and professional success require this critical skill, especially important yet difficult in challenging and stressful situations. What is often neglected is listening and understanding - the input side of communicating. Some of us are naturally good communicators; others, not so much. The good news is that communication is a skill that can be improved in this three-session mini-series.

Reno’s LaVere Redfield was an interesting character: a keen investor in the stock market and real estate; anti-government (especially the IRS); a ruthless businessman; a man who didn’t trust banks; a high-stakes gambler; a philanderer; a victim of at least two high-profile robberies; a man who hated to have his photo taken and a notorious hoarder. Using extensive research, local historians David & Gayle Woodruff examine the unusual and quirky story of one of Reno’s least known and eccentric “public” figures.

So many deities, so little time! It’s said that India has a god or goddess for everything, and consequently its traditions and spiritual history offer a rich, polytheistic pantheon—much older and far more dynamic than any found in Ancient Greece or Rome. This two-part series, held on August 4 and 11, will explore India’s principal deities, their alignment with specific spiritual traditions, and their representation in art, stories, myth, and ritual.

For many years, scholars have believed that seafaring abilities, especially over long distances, were beyond the abilities of distant prehistoric hunters and gatherers. Recent research, however, has questioned this view from a global perspective. There is now evidence from Asia, Australia, and the Mediterranean basin that Paleolithic peoples, and perhaps even pre-homo sapiens, had the ability to cross open bodies of water. This was no simple task, and required considerable technological and cognitive abilities.

Ageism is no different from sexism or racism, except in terms of awareness and sensitivity. Also, unlike being a member of a particular race, gender, religion, or nationality, all of us (if we live long enough) will feel the effects of having assumptions made about us based on how old we appear. We all express ageist attitudes since we were raised with them. This lecture will present the issue of ageism and how it impacts all of us, both in the present and the future. Age discrimination needs to be dealt with by all.

A cautionary tale about the fragility of democracy, It Can't Happen Here is an alarming, eerily timeless look at how fascism could take hold in America. Written during the Great Depression, it juxtaposes sharp political satire with the chillingly realistic rise of a president who becomes a dictator to save the nation from 'welfare cheats, sex, crime, and a liberal press.' Called a "message to thinking Americans" when it was published in 1935, let's discuss how shockingly prescient this novel continues to be in today's world. Please read the novel before the discussion!

When Bill Raggio was elected Washoe County District Attorney in 1958, he inherited a rampantly corrupt Reno city government and police department under the bribing influence of flashy local brothel owner Joe Conforte. Raggio’s reforms infuriated Conforte, who retaliated by attempting to blackmail Raggio. The subsequent trial would draw international news coverage. While Conforte was serving his prison sentence for that attempted extortion, Raggio further antagonized him by burning down his brothel. This spiteful, always colorful, public feud would continue for another 25 years, until Conforte fled the country to avoid federal racketeering charges.

This military campaign had far-reaching consequences: the near-depletion of the U.S. Treasury; the forced resignation of the secretary of war; the bankruptcy of the nation’s largest freighting company; severe damage to the reputation of a president and his nerve for confronting southern secession; the indictment of a church’s prophet and over one-thousand church leaders for treason and murder; and much more.

Every culture has at least one creation story and a flood myth; narratives with few people, complex symbolism, and the forces that separate the sky from the soil. One myth tells of a couple in a garden, but another shows the world emerging from a giant egg. Once troubles start, they grow and expand, and in many cultures, the gods grow angry and send water to cleanse the world. The survivors throw rocks, marry muskrats, and learn how to reboot humanity. Other cultures tell of gods who flood the world due to being extremely lazy hunters, and once the world floods truly by accident. We will explore these confounding and rewarding stories for their explanations of cultural norms, odd events, and unique perspectives.

The philosophic movement known as New Thought began in the early 1800’s in New England, influenced by people such as Ralph Waldo Emerson. It was born out of their restlessness of believing that there was something more to life than the rigid puritanical religious beliefs that had been unquestioned heretofore. A new freedom and philosophy emerged. Psychologist and philosopher William James labelled New Thought "the religion of healthy-mindedness.” The New Thought Movement is now a worldwide philosophy, faith, and way of being.

Based on the 2023 book, First Peoples of the Great Salt Lake: A Cultural Landscape from Nevada to Wyoming, this is a story of place. It is a story of language histories, the mingling of peoples, indigenes and immigrants, and the transformations that arise from interaction, both cooperation and conflict. It is a story of cultural resilience, persistence, and changing sense of place. An indigenous centered perspective tempers popular wisdoms about ancient Native American history. It is a story far deeper in time than any modern genealogy can trace.

Held in a historic German town, it occurred between Germany’s surrender in May and Japan’s surrender in September. Stalin, Truman, and Churchill/Atlee met to discuss the tricky remnants of the European war theater and the vagaries of the Pacific war theater still in process. It was Truman’s first international negotiation. Stalin’s power was at apogee. Churchill, defeated in a July Parliamentary election, was replaced by Clement Atlee, an international unknown, part way through the conference. The two Superpowers emerged. The Cold War germinated. The world shuddered.

Today no Thanksgiving is complete without the usual turkey and all the trimmings. But how did that tradition get started? And what was the “first Thanksgiving” really like? Did the early settlers really sit down to a meal of turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and all the rest? And what do we know about the lives of turkeys in the wild? How did humans prevent these birds from going extinct from overhunting? Join Alan Gubanich from the local Lahontan Audubon Society as he traces the history of wild turkeys from the days of early European settlement to the honored status of these birds today.

In 1989, Las Vegas proposed to pump almost three billion gallons of groundwater annually from thirty rural Great Basin valleys and pipe it 300 miles to the city. This water grab would have devastated wildlife and rural agriculture, if not for a small, determined group that fought for 31 years to a decisive 2020 victory that protected the Great Basin’s precious aquafers. In this sequel to his presentation at OLLI in March, Mike Branch will share the inspiring story of how a diverse alliance of high desert people resisted the water grab and protected sacred land.
