  • CANCELED: OLLI One Book: It Can't Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis
  • Dates: 11/6/2025 - 11/20/2025
    Times: 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
    Days: Th
    Modality: Hybrid
    Building: OLLI Campus
    Instructor: Alice Yucht

A cautionary tale about the fragility of democracy, It Can't Happen Here is an alarming, eerily timeless look at how fascism could take hold in America. Written during the Great Depression, it juxtaposes sharp political satire with the chillingly realistic rise of a president who becomes a dictator to save the nation from 'welfare cheats, sex, crime, and a liberal press.' Called a "message to thinking Americans" when it was published in 1935, let's discuss how shockingly prescient this novel continues to be in today's world. Our discussion will have 3 sessions.

    Times: 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM
    Days: M
    Modality: Hybrid
    Building: OLLI Campus
    Instructor: Steven Simms

Based on the 2023 book, First Peoples of the Great Salt Lake: A Cultural Landscape from Nevada to Wyoming, this is a story of place. It is a story of language histories, the mingling of peoples, indigenes and immigrants, and the transformations that arise from interaction, both cooperation and conflict. It is a story of cultural resilience, persistence, and changing sense of place. An indigenous centered perspective tempers popular wisdoms about ancient Native American history. It is a story far deeper in time than any modern genealogy can trace.

    FOUNTAINS OF LIFE

The idea of National Parks is as original to the United States as the Constitution itself. And as this great national experiment of conserving and protecting these iconic landscapes evolved, so did the way they were managed. From martial law to jet age design, the many concepts and policies put in place over the years at these magnificent cathedrals of Mother Nature, are as varied and interesting as the purlieu itself. Join us in a 60-minute slide show, as a few of these curious and memorable experiments in land management are recounted.

Potsdam: Confab with Consequences: the last Allied conference during World War II occurred July 17-August 2, 1945. Held in a historic German town, it occurred between Germany’s surrender in May and Japan’s surrender in September. Stalin, Truman, and Churchill/Atlee met to discuss the tricky remnants of the European war theater and the vagaries of the Pacific war theater still in process. It was Truman’s first international negotiation. Stalin’s power was at apogee. Churchill, defeated in a July Parliamentary election, was replaced by Clement Atlee, an international unknown, part way through the conference. The two Superpowers emerged. The Cold War germinated. The world shuddered.

Today no Thanksgiving is complete without the usual turkey and all the trimmings. But how did that tradition get started? And what was the “first Thanksgiving” really like? Did the early settlers really sit down to a meal of turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and all the rest? And what do we know about the lives of turkeys in the wild? How did humans prevent these birds from going extinct from overhunting? Join Alan Gubanich from the local Lahontan Audubon Society as he traces the history of wild turkeys from the days of early European settlement to the honored status of these birds today.

In 1989, Las Vegas proposed to pump almost three billion gallons of groundwater annually from thirty rural Great Basin valleys and pipe it 300 miles to the city. This water grab would have devastated wildlife and rural agriculture, if not for a small, determined group that fought for 31 years to a decisive 2020 victory that protected the Great Basin’s precious aquafers. In this sequel to his presentation at OLLI in March, Mike Branch will share the inspiring story of how a diverse alliance of high desert people resisted the water grab and protected sacred land.

The 1968 communist siege of the US Marine base at Khe Sanh marked the turning point in the Vietnam War. Heavily outnumbered by North Vietnamese Army forces, who hoped to bring a quick conclusion to that increasingly unpopular war by crushing the American garrison, the defenders were subjected to seven weeks of constant artillery fire, ground attacks, extreme adversity, and horrific casualties. Their survival largely hinged upon the success of a small band of bright, resourceful young officers who gambled on imaginative schemes during the ebb and flow of the battle swirling closely around them to save the combat base.
