Wild Turkeys and the First Thanksgiving
Today no Thanksgiving is complete without the usual turkey and all the trimmings. But how did that tradition get started? And what was the “first Thanksgiving” really like? Did the early settlers really sit down to a meal of turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and all the rest? And what do we know about the lives of turkeys in the wild? How did humans prevent these birds from going extinct from overhunting? Join Alan Gubanich from the local Lahontan Audubon Society as he traces the history of wild turkeys from the days of early European settlement to the honored status of these birds today.
