Were Paleolithic People Seafarers?

For many years, scholars have believed that seafaring abilities, especially over long distances, were beyond the abilities of distant prehistoric hunters and gatherers. Recent research, however, has questioned this view from a global perspective. There is now evidence from Asia, Australia, and the Mediterranean basin that Paleolithic peoples, and perhaps even pre-homo sapiens, had the ability to cross open bodies of water. This was no simple task, and required considerable technological and cognitive abilities.
